A better man than me!
On Monday, a United States Marine Corps F/A 18D attack aircraft was trying to reach MCAS Miramar. The details have not been released, but apparently something was wrong with the plane. Moments before the plane crashed, the pilot ejected from the doomed craft.
Military plane crashes are not that unusual. Unfortunately, in this case, the plane crashed into a subdivision and four members of a family were killed. There are two ways this story might normally end. First, with the mourning family and perhaps the obligatory anti-military protestors or with the mourning family screaming at the government and running out to find some low life lawyer to sue the Marines.
Instead, naturalized American citizen Dong Yun Yoon asked people to pray for the pilot that he not suffer because of this accident. He then called the Marine pilot, “one of the treasures of our country.”
This man is a better man than I am!
The words of Abraham Lincoln come to mind at a moment like this.
“I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.”
This weekend, I will light a candle at Church and say a prayer for this man and his family. And I will say that I am proud that this man is an American!
